One zero one IDEAS TO KICK START YOUR SEO

From Laage.se wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

Just a quickie.. I've written down the first 101 SEO related items that come into my mind and pulled the first URL out of a Google.com search. These are the types of things that all SEOs should have in the armoury ready and waiting to brain dump onto a piece of paper or screen. If you want to be an SEO you've simply got to have all these terms memorised. I was thinking about doing 300 as that still seems to be quite a popular number after the film. Either way, there's an unlimited amount and I'll probably find some time to write a few more. Get with the programme, learn the essentials and then you'll be on your way.

I thought it interesting to pull out the #1 ranked URL for each of the following terms and grab their meta description or first 50 words on site after I watching a pro webinar earlier today by good ol' Rand Fishkin here - http://www.seomoz.org/webinars/future-of-link-building

He says that the content that is in #1 for a term may not be the best quality and most informative source. You be the judge!

1. Sample Report

Website owners who use their website or websites as one of their important marketing strategies will be preoccupied with their website's ranking in the popular search engines. Some of the website owners will not worry too much about their rankings and they only keep themselves informed of the status of their website's ranking. However, this is not the case with the majority of the webmasters. They use their website ranking as an important parameter to measure their success or failure of their marketing efforts."

In 2010, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) began implementing internationalized country code TLDs, consisting of language-native characters when displayed in an end-user application. Creation and delegation of ccTLDs is described in RFC 1591 , corresponding to ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes."

If your site has a generic top-level domain, such as .com or .org, and targets users in a particular geographic location, you can provide us with information that will help us determine how your site appears in our search results. This will also improve Google's search results for geographic queries. This data supplements our existing information, and setting a geographic target won't impact your appearance in search results unless a user limits the scope of the search to a certain country."

9. Twitter Posting

"How To Post a Tweet

Twitter always asks the question "What's happening?" Each answer to that question is considered a Twitter update, or what people often call a "Tweet." Each update is 140 characters or less.

To Post Your Tweet via the Web

Log in to your Twitter account
Type your Tweet into the "What's happening?" box at the top of your screen (shown below).
Make sure your update is fewer than 140 characters. We'll count the characters for you! Remaining characters show up as a number below the box.
Click the Tweet button to post the Tweet to your profile.
You will immediately see your Tweet in the timeline on your homepage, as shown below.

To Post Your Tweet via Text Message

Another way (some say the best way!) to post updates is from your cell phone. First, set up your phone to link to your Twitter account, then simply send your message as a text to your appropriate Twitter short code."

11. Canonicalisation

"In computer science, canonicalization (abbreviated c14n, where 14 represents the number of letters between the C and the N), (also sometimes standardization or normalization) is a process for converting data that has more than one possible representation into a "standard", "normal", or canonical form. This can be done to compare different representations for equivalence, to count the number of distinct data structures, to improve the efficiency of various algorithms by eliminating repeated calculations, or to make it possible to impose a meaningful sorting order."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_crawler

14. Sitemaps

"Sitemaps are an easy way for webmasters to inform search engines about pages on their sites that are available for crawling. In its simplest form, a Sitemap is an XML file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each URL (when it was last updated, how often it usually changes, and how important it is, relative to other URLs in the site) so that search engines can more intelligently crawl the site."

16. Landing Pages

"A landing page is any page on a website where traffic is sent specifically to prompt a certain action or result. Think of a golf course... a landing page is the putting green that you drive the ball (prospect) to.

Once on the green, the goal is to get the ball into the hole. Likewise, the goal of the copy and design of a landing page is to get the prospect to take your desired action."

18. Meta Titles

"What are meta tags? They are information inserted into the "head" area of your web pages. Other than the title tag (explained below), information in the head area of your web pages is not seen by those viewing your pages in browsers. Instead, meta information in this area is used to communicate information that a human visitor may not be concerned with. Meta tags, for example, can tell a browser what "character set" to use or whether a web page has self-rated itself in terms of adult content."

19. Redirects

"URL redirection, also called URL forwarding and the very similar technique domain redirection also called domain forwarding, are techniques on the World Wide Web for making a web page available under many URLs.

Similar domain names

A user might mis-type a URL---for example, "example.com" and "exmaple.com". Organizations often register these "mis-spelled" domains and re-direct them to the "correct" location example.com. The addresses example.com and example.net could both redirect to a single domain, or web page, such as example.org. This technique is often used to "reserve" other top-level domains (TLD) with the same name, or make it easier for a true ".edu" or ".net" to redirect to a more recognizable ".com" domain."

Now that we've covered the all-important title tag and meta description tag, it's time to move on to the very misunderstood and abused meta tag, the meta keyword tag. Everyone knows that to obtain high search engine rankings all you have to do is put the keywords that you want to rank high with into your meta tags, right? Not even close! If it were that simple, I'd certainly be out of work. How many of you reading this column have obsessed over meta tags such as the keyword tag? How many of you have tried putting every relevant keyword you could think of into this meta tag, only to have your site continue to be nearly invisible in the search engines? How many of you couldn't decide if you should put commas between the keywords? Spaces? No commas? ALL CAPS? Plurals?" http://www.highrankings.com/metakeyword 35. Even external database lookups in various formats can be used to achieve highly granular URL matching." http://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/mod/mod_rewrite.html 44. Pagination "Pagination is the process of dividing information (content) into discrete pages, either electronic pages or printed pages. Today the latter are usually simply instances of the former that have been outputted to a printing device, such as a desktop printer or a modern printing press. For example, printed books and magazines are created first as electronic files (for example, PDF or QXD files) and then printed. Pagination encompasses rules and algorithms for deciding where page breaks will fall, which depends on semantic or cultural senses of which content belongs on the same page with related content and thus should not fall to another (e.g., widows and orphans)." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pagination 45. Robots.txt "The Web Robots Pages Web Robots (also known as Web Wanderers, Crawlers, or Spiders), are programs that traverse the Web automatically. Compression "In computer science and information theory, data compression, source coding or bit-rate reduction is the process of encoding information using fewer bits than the original representation would use. Compression is useful because it helps reduce the consumption of expensive resources, such as hard disk space or transmission bandwidth. On the downside, compressed data must be decompressed to be used, and this extra processing may be detrimental to some applications. For instance, a compression scheme for video may require expensive hardware for the video to be decompressed fast enough to be viewed as it is being decompressed (the option of decompressing the video in full before watching it may be inconvenient, and requires storage space for the decompressed video). The design of data compression schemes therefore involves trade-offs among various factors, including the degree of compression, the amount of distortion introduced (if using a lossy compression scheme), and the computational resources required to compress and uncompress the data." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_compression 47. Top Pages "Facebook Page Statistics. ... Top Pages ... Fastest Growing Pages. Based on pages with less than 1million fans." http://statistics.allfacebook.com/pages 48. Anchor text "The anchor text, link label or link text is the visible, clickable text in a hyperlink. The words contained in the anchor text can determine the ranking that the page will receive by search engines. Since 1998, some web browsers have added the ability to show a tooltip for a hyperlink before it is selected. Not all links have anchor texts because it may be obvious where the link will lead due to the context in which it is used. Anchor texts normally remain below 60 characters. Different browsers will display anchor texts differently. Usually, Web Search Engines analyze anchor text from hyperlinks on web pages." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anchor_text 49. Broad match "What is broad match? I. Description With broad match, the Google AdWords system automatically runs your ads on relevant variations of your keywords, even if these terms aren't in your keyword lists. Keyword variations can include synonyms, singular/plural forms, relevant variants of your keywords, and phrases containing your keywords. The keyword variations that are allowed to trigger your ads will change over time, as the AdWords system continually monitors your keyword quality and performance factors. Your ads will only continue showing on the highest-performing and most relevant keyword variations." http://adwords.google.com/support/aw/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=6136 50. Infographics "Information graphics or infographics are graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge.
